the silly-billy beams on willy-nilly

Before I rehash my winding “issues” I must say a big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to stop in at my Gallery in the last couple of days. I’ve been delighted to have such a host of visitors, and in fact so many of you have called in at the cafĂ© that I will have to bake more cakes! And a special word to Peg: that word is Yes, I do think tabs (or pages in wordpress-speak) are a good way to get organised for the long haul (and I sincerely hope that you are in this for the long haul as I love reading your textile adventures).

Anyway, on with that pink warp. It is now a pink, red and purple warp since I wound my second and third bouts, put in the lease sticks and laid the whole thing out in the raddle. Here’s a close-up, with my trusty black board behind the threads (you’ll need to click to biggify the picture as it won’t fit in the 500 pixels width I have here).

warp showing winding mistake

The black lines show the area where I used the wrong yarn

The couple of ends which are a much darker pink are intentional, it is the background colour which I muddled up. Those ends are one strand of a pale rose pink and one strand of the wrong pink – the black arrow is intended to point it out. I have looked at this, looked at it again, walked round and round the loom, turned my head to all kinds of angles and have decided to leave it as it is. While it isn’t the colour that I planned for it to be I am not sufficiently convinced that the planned colour would make it massively better. It would make it different, but it would also mean wasting a substantial chunk of yarn without necessarily improving the final outcome.

Of course, as soon as I make that decision, I immediately disagree with it. I go all around the loom again and decide that the colour is intolerable, completely disrupts the sequence and I cannot possibly live with it. Then I think that the whole thing is going to be crinkled up anyway and this little patch will hardly stand out so what is the worry? Then I wonder what is the point of choosing colours anyway if after all that it doesn’t matter which ones I use? Then I wonder how someone can take a simple mistake at the warping board and inflate it into an existential crisis…

So I have put a stop to all that and beamed it willy-nilly. This is my warp (full-size picture this time).

And now I’m weaving on it. So there!

I think it is a gorgeous warp!!! So gorgeous I would be afraid to weave it and wreck it! I definitely understand all this wavering and changing of minds. Happens to me all the time! Very frustrating. I gather this is going to be another one of your pleated pieces?
And yes, I am in the blogging business, so to speak, for the long haul, just as I am into weaving for the long haul. Tabs probably won’t appear for awhile, but the concept is taking root. Thank you for the great compliment.

One more thing. I suspect/hope that the photo of the warp actually on the loom and without the black underneath represents a little more accurately what is going on color-wise. I certainly like the warp there better than in the little photo (which I did blow up).

I think your warp is wonderful! I’ve found those little color mistakes often become a bit of “spark” for the scarf, and add more visual interest.

Thank you both – I’m glad you like it! Yes, Peg, the photo of the warp on the back beam is more ‘lifelike’, and it is harder to see the mistake there – which is a lesson in itself I reckon.

Can’t wait to see this underway – I think it’s lovely!
