a dash of red

I’m loving my green warp, but I’ve had an exciting request to design a wrap in shades of red and purple – i.e. all my favourite yarn colours.  It’s exciting partly because it is in reds and partly because it came to me through my little Etsy shop.  This is the first time I’ve done an arm’s length (or rather ocean’s width) commission and it is a hectic business sending photos back and forth rather than just popping some yarn samples in the mail and then having a chat! It makes getting accurate colour representation REALLY important.

My first attempt was made harder by the light colours which tended to disappear no matter what cunning things I did with my little lamp.

Fortunately, like me, my client prefers the darker colours!  So we dropped the lighter ones and the ones in the middle with an orangey cast.  Plus I was able to take advantage of daylight this afternoon.  I know that is not supposed to be a good thing, but it worked.  These are two photos that really look like the wrappings I have in front of me.

First an excursion into purples and pinks, playing about with light against dark and dark against light:

And finally the colours we both liked the best, a more muted combination of reds and violets:

I want to rush straight to the warping board and start sampling, but first I need to do some calculations.  Boo.  I’ve gone right off calculating things at the moment.  Must be a reaction to all the sums in the rest of my life.

Mmm… I like the last set of reds as well.

Also, it was fun to hear you on Weavecast as I was winding a warp over the weekend! I loved your essay.
