more polyphonic thoughts
Thinking is about as much as I’ve done for the last couple of weeks. Following the guild meeting where I was introduced to the mushroom scheme I managed to hurt my back and I have been hobbling around in a very bad mood ever since. Weaving has not progressed one single pick. What is it with 2009? I feel that I should spend the rest of the year in cold storage in case anything else goes wrong.
Anyway, on the train the other day I was trying to drown out the back discomfort with a bit of music and found myself listening to Arcoluz by Renaud Garcia-Fons, an artist whom we were lucky enough to hear at the Dundee Rep a couple of years ago. I have heard this CD many times, but having it piped right into my ears made me pay much closer attention than usual and I was particularly struck by the way the different rhythms seemed to be interleaved rather than simply overlaying one another – if that makes sense, my musical vocabulary is slim to non-existent – and it vividly conjured up for me visions of an echo weave or interleaved threadings. Aha! thinks I, another kind of polyphonic weaving, but with rhythm (threading) rather than chords (colour).
Feeling very chuffed with my novel insight, I set out to write a blog post, and in order to make it a proper blog post I started to look up some links as above: the artist, the venue and, of course, the album. It turns out, as I should have expected, that my insight is no insight at all. This reviewer, for one, is way ahead of me. Bah, humbug.
Lots for my little brain to think about, though, and all the more frustrating that I am not making cloth. My bad mood is turning into a way of life and I am sure it is exacerbated by not having a little cat to tend to. Going on holiday next week, so we will have to think about all this when we get home. In the meantime I will go back to keeping my grumpiness to myself. Who said “if you can’t think of anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”? It wasn’t just my mother, was it?

If it was just your mother who said that then we are sisters.
Grumpiness seems to be going around. I’m ‘suffering’ from a bad case of it myself……. :}
Yours in grumpiness,
Laura
Perhaps we are, Caroline – that would cheer me up (though it might startle my mother)
Thanks for sharing your grumpiness, Laura – we grumps should stick together! Especially as no-one else will want to talk to us
So sorry to hear about your back… and I hope you are on the mend. I suffer with back issues as well and no wonder you are grumpy! It’s nasty pain and grabs you every time you move any muscle or body part!
It will settle in time…. and the sun will shine again.
Susan
omg! your mother said that too!
perhaps you should google conspiracy theories.
Those mothers are out to get us!
My grandma used to say that! And she was a pretty quiet lady. Hmm…
Oh, we are clearly all related. I’m suffering from the grumps, too – or perhaps I should say that J, my other half, is suffering from my grumps! Bless him.
And here’s hoping your back is better very, very soon. I have hurt my back/hip, and every time I cough or sneeze, it tries to spasm. Helloooo, hayfever!! Infuriating, isn’t it?
Yeah, what is it with 2009? Around here we just blame El Niño or global weirding for everything. I’m sorry to hear about your back. Nothing is fun when you’re in pain. Pain-related or enforced-inactivity-related grumpiness doesn’t count, I say.
If you’re a bit crazy like me you may find it helps if you go around the house saying (or singing) to yourself “grump, grump, grump…”, try it?
I’ve got ‘flu (again) (not pig flu!!) so I’m grumping myself this week. Yup, weaving is more fun.
Take care of that back of yours, wishing you a speedy recovery of good humour and a good back…
I belive that the most famous mother to say that was Thumper’s mother in the Disney film Bambi. (Sorry about your back…no fun.)
is my mom your mom or vice versa?
hope you’re on the mend by now
neki desu
I hate those annuses horribilisesesss. I had one in… 2005? And another in 1996. The wheel turns, thankfully. Hang in there honey.
I’m sorry about your back! My cure all for back pain is ibuprofen.
Just because someone else came up with the same insight as you doesn’t make yours any less valuable!
I didn’t know about Clio either, I’m so sorry. That was the beginning of our home buying frenzy and I pretty much abandoned the internet. Purrs to you from Rascal and Catzee (an me).
